Larian Studios Announce a Latest Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The speculation around the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The secret is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer packed with striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team is likely designing a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it pioneered the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, branching plots, and flexible progression—traits that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths only possible if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also notoriously permissive, allowing players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be solved in diverse methods, frequently in surprising fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can look forward to a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
