A recent study indicates that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a major health publication shows that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such medications must be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to original weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Experts propose the way of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
People who have stopped the jabs describe a intense resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural management.
